Hibernation Dream
2021
Hibernation Dream is an artistic project of mine, combining my roles as performer, choreographer and filmmaker. The project resulted in an exhibition and film under the same title. The Hibernation Dream film uses dance to create vocals used to create music used to create the sounds of an office person’s dream. The project was developed creatively in collaboration with composer Sapphira Toppler.
Throughout September 2021 I premiered Hibernation Dream through developing a digital exhibition, shared online by videoclub, an agency supporting artists and audiences to engage with film, video and digital culture. The exhibition centered around the Hibernation Dream film whilst also providing guided improvisation text and video, a journal, and artist-led workshops.
Hibernation Dream has also been shared at Flatpack Festival, Birmingham International Dance Festival, AIR Gallery (Manchester), Nunnery Gallery (London) and Lincoln Museum.
Alongside making the film, the project involved artistic research, creating material using our different experiences of subjective and interpretive ideas being used to set objective criteria, specifically looking at the concept of the ‘natural’ and the experience of trying to fulfil this as a part of modern life.
I proceeded to create a film that structured improvised movement, and that fused and distorted performed sound. Through filmmaking, I sought to build an unworldly illustration of these ideas and experiences expressed using mine and Toppler’s perspectives.
The Hibernation Dream project is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
